Abstract :
In this article I analyze the phenomenon of the cult of prepodobna Stoyna – a Bulgarian prophetess, who is far less known than the renowned baba Vanga, but originated from the same region. At the age of 7, she became blind after an illness and since then had the gift of preaching and healing. At the beginning of the 20th century, she appeared in the church of Saint George in the village Zlatolist in Bulgaria, where she lived for 50 years and led the life of an anchorite until her death in 1933. Apparently, baba Vanga herself claimed that her predecessor baba Stoyna had three times more power than herself. Baba Stoyna lived on the balcony part of the church and there, in a room that has been preserved and is still visited to this day, accepted pilgrims. According to the stories, she was endowed with not only the gift of clairvoyance and healing, but also levitation and other powers. The Orthodox Church warns against the idolatry and heresy associated with this cult, yet their warning has no effect on the thousands of people who visit this place and treat prepodobna Stoyna as a saint. How has this blind woman with another form of sight continued to influence society? How does her power construct and deconstruct regimes of the in/visibility of Orthodox religion?
