C’est lui qui l’emporta sur la durée et désormais, il devait devenir possible de vivre en paix sans adhérer aux mêmes vérités. Mais la question se posa derechef de savoir comment réfléchir le lien civil sans reconstituer une nouvelle orthodoxie — ainsi de la religion naturelle du déisme ou la morale naturelle des matérialistes. L’opinion publique apparut alors comme relevant le défi pour autant qu’elle désubstantialisait sans appel le lien civil: au lieu de reléguer les opinions contradictoires dans la sphère immobile des choses indifférentes, elle faisait de cette contradiction le grand ressort du perfectionnement collectif. Mais bien entendu, elle devait à son tour se trouver exposée au soupçon de donner lieu, sous une forme ou une autre, à de nouvelles croyances. C’est là que nous en sommes. A number of answers have been put forward to the terrible troubles brought about by wars of religion: theological compromises, political erastianism and finally the modern concept of tolerance. It is this that won out in the long term and henceforth it was to become possible to live in peace without adhering to the same truths. But the question arose anew of how to think the civil bond without reconstituting a new orthodoxy — as in the case of the natural religion of deism or the natural ethics of materialists. Public opinion then appeared as taking up the challenge inasmuch as it desubstantialised irrevocably the civil bond: instead of relegating contradictory opinions to the immobile sphere of indifferent matters, it made from this contradiction the main spring of collective progress. But of course it was in turn to find itself exposed to the suspicion of giving way, in one form or another, to new beliefs. This is the situation we find ourselves in. |
