They were all martyred under different but in many ways similar circumstances. The three individuals are: Mani (ca. 215-277 C. E.), Hallaj (ca. 858-922 C. E.), and the Bab (1819-1850 C. E.). For each individual, the article provides a brief historical account of the period, a short biography, a brief description of their teachings and, finally, of the events that led to their death. One of the objectives of this work is to show that martyrdom does not only occur in the Abrahamic religions, as the case of Mani shows. In the final section, an attempt is made to study the root causes of martyrdom. |
