Abstract :
This article considers Das Platonisch-Hermetische Christenthum (1690-1691) by the Lutheran Ehregott Daniel Colberg with reference to various aspects of the Dutch context. In the absence of a state church, there existed a relatively tolerant atmosphere in the Republic with regard to the several sects. The work of Willem van Swaanenburg (1679-1728) is an expression of this ‘Platonic-Hermetic Christianity’, which is professed within the accepted confines of the orthodoxy.
