Almost everywhere in eighteenth-century literature, religion is indisputably present in the background, although often in a hidden way. Still, in many modern studies explicit attention to this theme is lacking. Is this because the present-day scholar does not feel entirely at ease with religion, theology and the church? Also the eighteenth-century writers themselves are to be blamed, because they do not offer us a natural border between literature and devotional texts. Sermons, essays, religious songs of high quality easily alternate with merely edifying products. We are still waiting in this field of historical research for recent biographies of important writers such as Hoogvliet, Van Winter-van Merken, Feith and Kantelaar. But a number of scholars like Buijnsters, Buisman, Van Eynatten, Hanou, De Vries and Vuyk have contributed considerably to the subject in the past 25 years. |
