Journal: Ancient Near Eastern Studies Volume: 33 Date: 1995 Pages: 17-29 DOI: 10.2143/ANES.33.0.525748 Abstract : In the series on the Gublaic (Byblian) syllabic inscriptions we now consider the bronze spatulate tablets (B, E, F, I). The reason for teir spatula shape is not yet manifest. Their inscriptions are shorter than those on Plates C and D and reveal less context. These brief texts are therefore enigmatic in content, and any attempt to decipher them is hampered by their frequent illegiblility (because of damage of the metal), and also by the presence of a few idiosyncratic signs. Consequently my suggested readings will differ from Mendenhall's at many points. Unfortunately I can only offer a few ideas on some possible lines of investigation, which others might pursue with better results than achieved here. |
