Abstract :
Jeremiah chaps. 26 (LXX 33) and 36 (43) tell of the prophet's two narrow escapes during the earlier years of the reign of King Jehoiakim. The purpose of this essay is to examine the markedly abridged (and juxtaposed) version of the two chapters found in Josephus Antiquitates Judaicae (hereafter Ant.) 10.89-95. More specifically, my study will involve a comparison between the Josephan passage and its Biblical source chapters as represented by the following major witnesses: MT (BHS), LXX and Targum Jonathan on the Latter Prophets. My investigation is guided by two oversearching questions: 1) which text form(s) of Jeremiah 26 and 36 did Josephus utilize in composing Ant. 10.89-955?; and 2) how, why and with what effect did he deal with the source data in this instance.
