Document Details : Title: The Faith of the Galileans Subtitle: The Parenthesis in Jn 4,44 Author(s): VAN BELLE, G. Journal: Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses Volume: 74 Issue: 1 Date: April 1998 Pages: 27-44 DOI: 10.2143/ETL.74.1.504787 Abstract : The saying in Jn 4,44 was the starting point for my study of the parentheses in the Fourth Gospel. The verse is one of the most famous “asides” and is mentioned in nearly every survey of Johannine parentheses. The saying belongs to generally accepted and timeless popular wisdom. It is found in the Synoptic Gospels (Mk 6,4; Mt 13,57; Lk 4,24), in POxy 1,6, and in the Gospel of Thomas 31. In the Fourth Gospel it occurs in a “transitional passage”. |
