Document Details : Title: «Le Royaume de T(h)arse» Subtitle: Un état non identifié mentionné dans La Fleur des histoires de la terre d'Orient de Hayton, seigneur de Kuṙikōs Author(s): MATEVOSYAN, Karen , GRIGORYAN, Samvel Journal: Revue des Études Arméniennes Volume: 42 Date: 2023-2024 Pages: 185-208 DOI: 10.2143/REA.42.0.3293644 Abstract : The paper focuses on the identification and localization of the 'Kingdom of T(h)arsa' mentioned in the Flower of Histories of the East by Hayton de Corc (Hetʽum of Kuṙikōs, Hetʽum the Historian) and other European medieval sources — including travelogues, maps and armorials — as well as on the origin of the name of the kingdom and etymology of the exonym 'tarsa'. The latter reflects the perception of the non-Muslim population and minorities of China, Uyghur regions and Central Asia by the Muslims. The term was adopted by the Armenians and Europeans in the early period of the formation of Pax Mongolica, most probably directly from Persian. The topic is highlighted in the context of international and interreligious entanglements between various states, entities and ethno-confessional groups of East Asia during and around the Age of Mongol globalization. Special attention is paid to the interaction of the Armenians and Mediterranean Armenia with the diversity of the Mongol Empire. |
