Document Details : Title: 'In That Former Time' by Yovasap' Sebastac'i (1508-1564) Subtitle: Translation and Notes Author(s): STONE, Michael E. Journal: Revue des Études Arméniennes Volume: 42 Date: 2023-2024 Pages: 155-162 DOI: 10.2143/REA.42.0.3293642 Abstract : The article presents a translation and reading of the poem 'In that Former Time' composed by Yovasap‘ Sebastac‘i (ca. 1510-1564). The poem is built around the figure of the Rose and the Nightingale, a popular trope in mediaeval Armenian poetry. It traces the poet’s movement from earthly love to love of Christ, using the theme of wine and drunkenness as a metaphor. He describes how his drugged and disorientated earthly perception clarifies after he turns his mind to the celestial and sees a vision of the Rose (Christ). He ends his journey, setting the earthly apart from the heavenly. |
