Document Details : Title: La chronique de Step'annos Ōrbēlean, un texte composite Author(s): AUGÉ, Isabelle Journal: Revue des Études Arméniennes Volume: 42 Date: 2023-2024 Pages: 115-144 DOI: 10.2143/REA.42.0.3293640 Abstract : At the end of the 13th century, Step‘annos Ōrbēlean wrote a history of the province of Siwnik‘, which he entitled the Book of Memories. The reader of this composite work suspects that the author hesitates between the desire to preserve the temporal possessions of his see — by inserting copies of numerous legal documents of donation, the biographical account of the bishops of Siwnik‘ — and writing the history of a family, the Ōrbēleans. In all, some thirty title deeds are preserved in this chronicle, which brings it closer to a cartulary-chronicle. Here, we examine the author’s objectives and methods, followed by the documents relating to the Tat‘ew monastery. Often, the author reproduces them very precisely, citing witnesses and signs of corroboration. A table summarizing all these documents and their content is given at the end of the article. Finally, the chronicler quotes three inscriptions also found at Tat‘ew, and discusses the possible link between the title deeds and the inscriptions. |
