Journal: Orbis Volume: 34 Date: 1985-1987 Pages: 148-152 DOI: 10.2143/ORB.34.0.2013012 Abstract : The field of Old Prussian is beyond any doubt one of the most interesting for the future of comparative Baltic, and also comparative Indo-European studies. As a matter of fact, both Balticists and Indo-Europeanists have not yet fully exploited the Old Prussian materials within a comparative perspective, a notable exception being Schmid's model study on verbal morphology and morphophonology. This state of affairs has to be explained by the fact that, contrary to Lithuanian and Latvian, there are no modern remnants of Prussian, and by the fact that the interpretation of Old Prussian documents is highly dependent on the comparatist's position concerning the relation between Old Prussian orthography and the phonetic realizations underlying it. |
