Journal: Orbis Volume: 34 Date: 1985-1987 Pages: 136-147 DOI: 10.2143/ORB.34.0.2013011 Abstract : The Indo-European languages are now spread throughout the world: in historical times they have occupied most of Europe and a tract of southwestern Asia from Armenia to India. Whether or not this historic extent was the result of earlier expansion and if so from where is a question that remains interesting because the answer to it would assist in the interpretation of a number of facts in European and western Asian prehistory. That new answers continue to be proposed and old answers reproposed reflects the fact that neither linguistic nor archaeological evidence alone is enough to determine a solution. In this paper I will suggest how linguistic evidence may be used to discriminate between competing archaeological solutions so that a result is reached that is satisfactory on both accounts. |
