Document Details : Title: Woord - Betekenis - Term Author(s): DROSTE, Flip G. Journal: Leuvense Bijdragen - Leuven Contributions in Linguistics and Philology Volume: 93 Date: 2004 Pages: 61-75 DOI: 10.2143/LB.93.0.2011692 Abstract : According to C.S. Peirce 'Every sign stands for an object independent of itself; but it can only be a sign in so far as the object is itself of the nature of a sign or tought'. Thus, two movements can be discerned in the semiotic process: from sign to object and from object to sign. It is argued here that the first movement primarily characterizes the meaning of the word, whereas the inverted direction is characteristic for that of the term. Consequently, the conceptual structures of word and term show a whole new series of fundamental differences. |
