From approximately 1719 onwards, the question of what function the newspaper should fulfil is debated. The rise of the city newspapers marks the increasing importance of the citizen. Politically, the newspapers gain prominence in the second half of the eighteenth century as the voice of politically discontent citizens. The Zuid-Hollandsche Courant is an example of this development. There is need not only for research into the contents of the newspapers, but also for a systematic description of the extant copies of newspapers and an assessment of their accessiblity. |
