Abstract :
Periodicals are said to have been invented in the eighteenth century. Even if most of the many new titles did not last for more than a few weeks, the genre as such formed a new medium that is best comparable to the rise of the internet in this age. A complete new system of retrieving information and of communication, accessible for many, made people more than ever involved in social and political matters. This article considers the role of periodicals in the eighteenth-century Netherlands, the research that has been done on the subject, and the debates that have arisen at this point.
