Journal: Louvain Studies Volume: 29 Issue: 1-2 Date: Spring-Summer 2004 Pages: 166-186 DOI: 10.2143/LS.29.1.505253 Abstract : This paper explores an area of Rahner’s thought that receives less attention than it should, namely, the moral or axiological dimension of Rahner’s theology of death and its soteriological implications. This important theme will be situated within the context of Rahner’s theological anthropology, linking it in particular to his understandings of the “consummation” of the individual, time and eternity. It will be shown that the moral-soteriological aspects of Rahner’s theology of death are fundamentally bound up with his understanding of Christian death as a dying with Jesus Christ, something foreshadowed in the sacramental nature of Christian existence. Certain criticisms of Rahner on death are challenged, whilst others are raised and upheld. |
