After a brief history of the hypertext concept and its affinities with literary studies, he distinguishes between three groups of hypertexts. Linear structures generally go back to earlier (paper) models: the strictly linear to the traditional book, the annotative structure to notes and glosses, and the arborescent structure to the ‘choose your own adventure’ type of popular literature. Within the group of multi-linear structures, it seems that the strictly multi-linear structure is the most inherently based on an earlier paper model i.e. that of novels with parallel story-structures. The interweaving structure and the bottleneck are innovative and carry the potential to introduce a new paradigm that may in due course allow hypertext literature to become an independent medium with its own techniques and tradition. Non-linear hypertexts, finally, radically choose for a breach with the paper past. They are in several respects the most innovative and most promising hypertext form to date. For each of the story structures mentioned the author discusses the most important characteristics from a theoretical angle and offers, whenever possible, Dutch examples. |
