Abstract :
The fate of the Armenian prince Hamam Arewelc‘i in the 9th century was particularly cruel. Forced by Muslim oppression to assist in the execution of his own brother, he became a monk and penitent for the rest of his life. The article is devoted to one of his works, entitled Brief Extracts from Arabic Books on Musical Art. Although this text was published in the journal Bazmavep in 1875, it has remained out of sight of scholars ever since. The text is interesting from the point of view of studying a number of theories and doctrines. It is also of interest in the context of Armenian-Arab cultural relations. The comparison of medieval Armenian sources on musical aesthetics and theory with similar texts from the Near East reveals remarkable parallels and reciprocal relationships.
