Abstract :
In the reception of Andreas Burnier’s novella Het jongensuur (1969) two different interpretations stand in contrast to each other: is the protagonist a feminist gender crosser who wants to live as a boy in order to achieve more freedom, or is her masculinity an expression of a deeper gender identity? This article shows that the feminist and transgender readings do not only focus on a different theme, but that both interpretations are based on two recognizable narratives, namely Bildung plots and stories of gender transition. Each describes a different bodily evolution: the body-in-development and the body-in-transition. Based on insights from feminist and transgender narratology, and Daniel Punday’s ‘corporeal narratology’, I investigate how body images take shape in narratives, which specific normative body images are foundational for Bildung and gender transition plots, and to what extent the protagonist’s body in Het jongensuur fits those images.
