Abstract :

The article focuses on Mc 5:15 which has seldom been interpreted in the field of New Testament exegesis. After a brief overview of the history of research and a critical analysis of the literary genre traditionally assigned to V. 15, the author elaborates on the plausibility that V. 15 alludes to the motifs displayed on the Judaea-Capta-coins. Thereby, V. 15 is read against the backdrop of the First Judean-Roman war and the Roman army – frameworks which have already been used fruitfully to interpret the whole pericope. Subsequently, the implications of this interpretation are elaborated with regard to the character of the 'Gerasene' (a Diaspora Jew) and the dating of Mark’s gospel (after 70 AD). An argument in favour of further exegetical research into the field of 'narrative forms of overstrikes' concludes the article.
