Document Details : Title: The Ethiopic Version of Stephen the Theban's Sermo asceticus Author(s): SUCIU, Alin , TEFERA, Amsalu Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 132 Issue: 3-4 Date: 2019 Pages: 475-507 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.132.3.3287191 Abstract : The Sermo asceticus of Stephen of Theban is extant in Arabic, Coptic (Sahidic), Ethiopic (Gǝ῾ǝz), Georgian, and Greek. Furthermore, several extracts from it have survived in paterika manuscripts. The present article offers the editio princeps of the Gǝ῾ǝz version. The introduction of the paper surveys the dense textual transmission of the Sermo asceticus in different languages. Then, the relationships between the versions are analyzed. The study concludes that the Sermo asceticus was originally written in Coptic, not in Greek, and that the Gǝ῾ǝz text was translated from Arabic. |
