Document Details : Title: Ancient Greek Vase Iconography Subtitle: Theories and Practice Author(s): PALEOTHODOROS, Dimitris Journal: Pharos Volume: 22 Issue: 1 Date: 2016 Pages: 49-72 DOI: 10.2143/PHA.22.1.3285001 Abstract : This paper examines the role of vase iconography through the history of classical studies. The aim is twofold: to begin with presenting a historiographical account of the main stages of scholarship development in the field of interpreting the scenes on ancient Greek vases. In the last section, I describe and propose a new direction for the field that is being formed up in the recent years, one allying iconography with field archaeological work and which goes beyond the art-historical, philological and anthropological approaches dominating the research in the past. |
