Later, in the 6th century AD, Jordanes (Romana 4.75 and 28.16) mentions this city with the name of Pulpudeva. The existence of a dava in the Thracian area is surprising. The author searches for an explanation through the presence of a Geto-Dacian enclave in the area of Philippopolis, a toponym perceived in their language as Pulpudava, and in late antiquity (Jordanes) as Pulpudeva (= Pulpudiva, later adopted by the Slavs: Plovdiv). |
