Abstract :
Raman spectroscopy is an analysis technique that offers many possible applications within archaeometry and that may be a suitable method to use alongside traditional art-historical research. Although the technique was first utilised as early as the 1920s, several instrumental improvements were necessary to make this method suitable for art analysis. In order to avoid any chance of damaging the work of art, it is possible nowadays to use mobile equipment to carry out analyses in situ. MArtA (Mobile Art Analyser) is a mobile Raman spectrometer that has been designed specifically for art analysis. This equipment makes it possible to examine different types of artefacts under all kinds of measurement conditions. This essay discusses examples of analyses in museum environments as well as of mural paintings in situ, but with the warning that working conditions and environmental factors may affect the measurement results.
