Abstract :
The Byzantine dromon, usually perceived by scholars as a fairly static notion, undergoes multiple evolutions between the late fifth and the tenth century, both in regard to the naval vessel itself and to the complement it carries. A new analysis of figures provided in De cerim. II, 44 for the military personnel mobilized for the campaign of 910 reveals a new concept of dromon that takes shape in the early tenth century and appears firmly established by the time of the Cretan campaign of 949 (De cerim. II, 45). The study of this short-term evolution is preceded by a sketch of the dromon’s early history and of the emergence of the Byzantine navy, and followed by a review of evidence on the supplies- and horse-transports, the pamphyloi.
