Abstract :

In the Gospel according to John, Jesus is never explicitly called «Son of David», unlike in Mk 10,47-48, Lk 18,38-39 and especially Mt 1,1; 9,27; 15,22; 20,30-31; 21,9.15. However, the enigmatic mention of the duration of the illness (38 years) of the man healed by Jesus at the Bethesda pool (Jn 5,5), when read in its wider context (Jn 5-10), and in light of the intertextuality with the story of David in the Second Book of Samuel, does show that the reality of this Davidic filiation is far from absent from the Fourth Gospel.
