Abstract :

The Refutation of the Christian doctrine of the divinity of Christ based on the Gospels, does not rely on the traditional Muslim argument that Scripture was falsified (taḥrīf), and instead recognizes the authority of the canonical Gospels. The author, using al-Ġazālī’s methodology (m. 1111), develops an original hermeneutical principle to claim the objectivity of his refutation. The article aims to present these rational and intertextual principles and looks at how they are applied to some New Testament statements. In so doing, it aims to shed light on the hermeneutical limitations of the demonstration, particularly with reference to Gadamer’s epistemology. However, the present article also seeks to explore how recognition of the status of the Gospels can be a starting point to engage in theological dialogue between Christians and Muslims.
