La plupart des bibles et des commentaires lisent ce verset de manière exclusivement répressive: le Seigneur, tel un juge pour Israël, en viendrait à punir son partenaire pour manquement à ses obligations d’alliance. Toutefois, une lecture attentive du passage d’Os 10 révèle une interprétation moins uniforme qu’il n’y paraît. Ainsi, comment comprendre qu’aussitôt après le prononcé de la sanction, le Seigneur offre une nouvelle chance à celui qui a pourtant déçu son attente? L’examen du vocabulaire et des formes grammaticales montre que l’attitude du Seigneur s’apparente davantage à celle d’un père pour son fils Israël. À cet égard, l’étude montre que l’injonction divine d’Os 10,10, aussi radicale soit-elle, n’est pas dépourvue de valeur éducative qui la rapproche de certains courants de sagesse. How should we understand God’s action in Hosea 10:10? Most bibles and commentaries understand this verse in a purely repressive sense: the Lord, like a judge over Israel, comes to the point of punishing his partner because of not respecting the obligations of his allegiance. However careful reading of the passage reveals a less uniform interpretation than appears at first sight. How can we understand that after the sentence has been pronounced, the Lord offers a second chance to the person who has disappointed his expectations? An examination of the vocabulary and grammatical forms shows that the Lord’s attitude is closer to the attitude of a father for his son Israel. From this point of view, this study shows that God’s command in Hosea 10:10, however radical, is not without a certain educational value which makes it close to certain currents of wisdom literature. |
