It is as if the union they are longing for belongs to a time still to come. Nevertheless, here and there in the book, some passages, as they are usually translated, give the impression that the beloved abides in the presence of her lover, and therefore that their union occasionally becomes a reality. This paper argues for another translation of those verses, which therefore gives the opposite impression. This in turn leads to questioning the appropriateness of several current interpretations in which those verses played an important, if not determinant, role. |
