Abstract :
In this article the library of Joannes Assuerus Bosman, parish priest in Swalmen from 1718 to 1760, is presented. In addition, it compares to two other types of clerical book collections: those of three Roermond monasteries and those of five parishes (staties) in the Dutch Republic. Compared to the first type Bosman possessed more practically oriented theological literature, especially moral and sermons. In these aspects, Bosman’s library resembled those of the priests in Holland. The latter however laid more stress on polemic and piety literature, which can easily be explained from the different geographic and ecclesiologic context in which they operated. It also comes out that Bosman owned an unexpectedly high number (12%) of titles that explicitly took part in the Jansenism-debate. From this he probably cannot be reckoned to one of both parties. However a difference can be discerned in the anti-jansenistica in the library which bore a more scholarly character, while the jansenistica were much easier to find an application in Bosman’s daily pastoral duties.
