Of all the texts in the Mandaean corpus, the so-called Rivers Scroll (Diwan d-Nahrawatha) would seem to hold a special place in the history of religions. In striking pictographic form it presents the flow of divine life into the waters of ‘the known terrestrial cosmos,’ thus suggesting, perhaps for the first time in history, a moving current of heavenly energy through the spaces and times of our world.
