The initials in many of these books have been engrossed with penwork, a simple form of decoration which occurs in a range of different forms and motifs. These forms and motifs turn out to have distinctive features on the base of which different penwork styles can be discerned. Manuscripts and incunabula can be classified according to the style to which the penwork of their initials belongs. This may provide helpful in understanding the genesis of a manuscript or the completion of an incunable and in determining the origin and subsequent history of the book. |
