Abstract :
Americanization of European Family Names in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries
At first glance many American family name seem idiosycratic (Adair, Bushway, Conine, Dragoo, Estes, Kefauver, Labo, Prine, Rapleye), while other have an English-seeming spelling (Abshire, Colliflower, Fraley, Rainwater, Shockey) although no trace of them is found in the British Isles. Most such names originated in North America in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries on the basis of German, Dutch, and French originals. This article surveys the linguistic processes and the historical background, in contrast with the comparative stability of more recent immigrant names (Polish, Italian, etc.). A combination of linguistic research, demographic analysis, and genealogical investigation, often using recently available on-line resources, has succeeded in tracing the origins of many such names, sometimes with certainty, more often with a high degree of probability. There are however, many remaining puzzles and unsolved mysteries. Much remains to be done.
