Abstract :
The Book of Judges makes reference to the settlement of the tribe of Dan in two separate contexts, i.e. the brief allusion in 1,34 and the extended narrative of chaps. 17–18 (where the account of Dan’s movements are interwoven with a story about the idolatrous cult of the Ephramite Micah). Josephus combines these two distinct references into a single, continuous narrative in Ant. 5.175-178, likewise markedly compressing the presentation of Judges 17–18. This comparative study of Judges’ Danite materials and its Antiquities parallel seeks, inter alia, to ascertain the textual affinities of Josephus’ version as well as the reasons for and effects of the changes made by to him to his biblical Vorlage.
