Abstract :
The discourse of Shenute translated below is found in a codex owned by the Institut française d’Archéologie orientale in Cairo and published by Émile Chassinat in volume 23 of the institute’s Mémoires under the title Le Quatrième Livre des Entretiens et Épîtres de Shenouti (Cairo: IFAO, 1911) in which it occupies pages 126-153.4 according to Chassinat’s pagination. The discourse bears the ancient heading, “Likewise in the Presence of Eraklammon the Governor.” Of the nine works preserved in the codex, eight completely and one partially, it is the last to appear in modern translation1. In addition to the complete copy of this discourse found in White Monastery codex XH, translated here, the work is partially preserved in three other White Monastery codices, YS, DT and DU2.
