Abstract :
The dialogue between faith and culture - on the reflective level: the dialogue between theology and culture - has often proved very fruitful in the past. The most famous theologians in hstory of Christianity are, for the most part, those who succeeded in restructuring and reformulating the tradition of faith on the basis of the encounter of faith (theology) and culture. Examples would include Origen, Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Duns Scotus and Friedrich Schleiermacher. Also in the more recent past the most well-known theologians conceived their theological projects in terms of the dialogue with (modern) culture - more specifically with modern philosophy and sciences through which modern culture became reflective. Moreover, in modern theology the dialogue with culture became a methodological demand. Modern theologians like Paul Tillich, Karl Rahner, Bernard Lonergan, Hans Küng and Edward Schillebeeckx owe their renown to the success of such dialogue.
