Journal: Louvain Studies Volume: 24 Issue: 2 Date: summer 1999 Pages: 103-118 DOI: 10.2143/LS.24.2.542139 Abstract : To start from a concrete and Irish example: the autumn 1998 number of Studies was entitled “Cultural Change in Ireland: Intuitions from Creative Writers.” For the first time in its 87 years as a quarterly review, this journal devoted an entire issue to this theme and invited some of the new generation of novelists, poets and dramatists to reflect on how Ireland had experienced a major cultural shift within their life-times. In particular they commented on the secularization experienced by the new generations, where as one film director noted with some shock, children officially brought up as Catholics no longer know how to bless themselves: he was filming a scene which required this gesture from a group of boys and he had to teach them how! |
