Abstract :
This article considers the question: who caused the writing of the Assyrian king list ('the AKL')? On the available material, the author argues that Šamši-Adad I, who is generally held responsible, is not the responsible for the list. He states that the most likely candidate is Aššur-nasir-pal I. In so far as any motive for its creation is discernable, the author suggests it was to preserve data about Assyria's kings which was already becoming lost.
