Document Details : Title: An Unrecognized Modern Forgery Subtitle: The 'Homilia in dedicatione ecclesiae' on Saint Dalmazzo of Pedona (Clavis Patrum Latinorum 1004) Author(s): PARTOENS, Gert Journal: Humanistica Lovaniensia Volume: 72 Date: 2023 Pages: 381-449 DOI: 10.2143/HLO.72.0.3292729 Abstract : This article shows that the Homilia in dedicatione ecclesiae (Clavis Patrum Latinorum, no 1004), whose editio princeps was published in 1929 by Alfonso Maria Riberi, is not a late-antique text, but a modern forgery produced after 1628. The forger was inspired by the language of the fifth-century bishop Valerian of Cimiez and – assuming he is not to be identified with Riberi – included the text together with Valerian’s sermons De bono martyrii (Serm. 15-17) in an antedated manuscript (1583) containing texts dedicated to the North-Italian Saint Dalmazzo. This manuscript – assuming that it has really existed – went missing between Riberi’s discovery of the dedication sermon and its publication in 1929. The hypothesis, which is defended in reference to collations, word usage, and the homily’s relation to some early-modern witnesses of the Officium for Saint Dalmazzo, allows us to definitively conclude some scholarly discussions concerning the homily. |
