Abstract :
Edition, translation and critical commentary of the chapter on Juno from the unpublished treatise by Caro, Veterum Hispaniae deorum Manes sive reliquiae. After an introduction on the relationship of this goddess with Jupiter, and on her main epithets and qualities, Caro comments on several passages from Strabo (3.5.5), Pliny (nat. 4.120 and 3.7) and Pomponius Mela (2.96 and 3.4) about her cult in three or four places in the province of Cadiz: Hera’s island near the Strait of Gibraltar, which he identifies with the island of Cadiz that the natives called Island of Juno, the present-day Trafalgar headland then called Juno’s Headland, and a shrine and temple near Hasta Regia and Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Finally, he transcribes three votive inscriptions (CIL II 1083, 1024 and 1036) from Villalba del Alcor (Huelva), Alange and Reina (Badajoz).
