Document Details : Title: Two Poetic Tombs Subtitle: Daniel Rogers' Literary Activities on the Death of Hadrianus Junius and Charles de Boisot Author(s): HEESAKKERS-KAMERBEEK, Wil Journal: Humanistica Lovaniensia Volume: 72 Date: 2023 Pages: 139-155 DOI: 10.2143/HLO.72.0.3292715 Abstract : An unedited letter, obviously not written for publication, from the English diplomat Daniel Rogers to Janus Dousa presents an insight into life in Zeeland and Holland in 1575, a period in which Zeeland as gateway to Holland was also battleground of the Revolt. Rogers was, like others, upset by the unexpected death of Charles de Boisot on 29 September of that year, especially since he had met the governor of Walcheren the day before his death. Rogers immediately produced a funerary poem as well as a poem in hendecasyllables for Dousa. He also mentions an elegy on Hadrianus Junius. The letter and the three poems, which were edited by Dousa in Manes Juniani et Boisotici and in Libri Silvarum II Adoptivi as parts of his Nova Poemata (Leiden, 1576) show how Rogers proceeded, so that for us these dramatis personae in the turmoils of the Revolt come to life. |
