In Samaritan studies he was one of the giants in the early days of that specialty. Through the acquisition of Samaritan manuscripts, his correspondence with Samaritans and his numerous writings about Samaritan subjects he contributed substantially to our knowledge of this religious community. And this despite his romantic penchant for anything old – old manuscripts and old traditions and practices that proved in his mind that Samaritanism in many respects is not dependant on Judaism. The paper situates Gaster within the history of Samaritan studies, presents his major works in this field, and highlights two areas in which he produced ground-breaking work – the study of Samaritan marriage contracts and the question of a Hebrew Vorlage for the Samaritan Book of Joshua. Particularly in the case of the latter question he initiated a scholarly discussion which is still ongoing and has not yet found a definitive answer. Non seulement Moses Gaster fut un polymathe qui contribua à plusieurs champs de recherche, mais il fut actif en fait d’éducation, d’administration, et en matière politique et religieuse. Dès le début, il fut reconnu comme une sommité dans le domaine des études samaritaines et il a largement contribué à la connaissance de la communauté religieuse samaritaine, par ses acquisitions de manuscrits, sa correspondance avec les Samaritains ainsi que ses nombreux écrits à leur sujet. Toutefois, du fait de son penchant romantique vers l’ancien, il tint le samaritanisme pour tel et dès lors, sous plusieurs aspects, pour indépendant du judaïsme. Cet article situe Moses Gaster dans l’histoire des études samaritaines, en mettant en exergue, parmi d’autres, deux de ses domaines d’étude, les contrats de mariage samaritains et la question d’une Vorlage hébraïque du Livre de Josué samaritain. Dans ce dernier cas, il a été à l’origine d’une discussion savante qui se poursuit toujours et qui n’a pas encore trouvé de réponse définitive. |
