What these ancient writings demonstrate is that the individuals behind their making also lived in a world of ruins and were aware of the formidable locations connected to them. But what is striking about these biblical passages is that the importance granted to such remains is something other than the information they might provide about those populations who had once inhabited them. Never, in other words, do we read of attempts to explore these sites, to dig among them, and connect their ruins to the cultures and civilizations that had come before. This study asks why. Why, that is, in a collection of writings awash in references to ruins, is there not a single mention of a site unearthed in order to inspect what these remains might reveal about those who lived there previously? Dans la Bible hébraïque, nous trouvons un grand nombre de références à des ruines dispersées dans un certain nombre de livres bibliques. Ces écrits anciens démontrent que les individus à l’origine de leur création vivaient également dans un monde de ruines et étaient conscients des lieux impressionnants qui leur étaient liés. Mais ce qui est frappant dans ces passages bibliques, c’est que l’importance accordée à de tels vestiges est autre que l’information qu’ils pourraient fournir sur les populations qui les avaient autrefois habités. Jamais, en d’autres termes, nous ne lisons de tentatives pour explorer ces sites, pour creuser en ces lieux et pour relier leurs ruines aux cultures et civilisations qui les avaient précédés. Cette étude se demande pourquoi. Pourquoi, autrement dit, dans une collection d’écrits inondés de références aux ruines, n’y a-t-il pas une seule mention d’un site exhumé afin d’inspecter ce que ces vestiges pourraient révéler sur ceux qui y vivaient auparavant? |
