Document Details : Title: On the Emergence of Analytic Philosophy of Religion Author(s): PIHLSTRÖM, Sami Journal: Logique et Analyse Volume: 256 Date: 2021 Pages: 351-372 DOI: 10.2143/LEA.256.0.3290348 Abstract : This paper examines the early history of analytic philosophy of religion by drawing attention to both philosophers who were critical of religion and theology (e.g., logical empiricists like A.J. Ayer) and philosophers who tried to analyze the distinctive nature of religious language from a logically empiricist perspective (e.g., Richard Braithwaite). The early analytic philosophers’ of religion focus on issues of (cognitive) meaningfulness can be contrasted with the later emphasis in the analytic tradition on metaphysical and epistemological questions concerning theism and atheism. This is also relevant to how we view the historical development and future prospects of analytic philosophy of religion in relation to, for example, pragmatism. |
