The artist had been a popular character before the 1900s, but his literary portrayal changes after the turn of the century. Traditionally, the artist was pictured as a degenerate, a bohemian living in social isolation, but this romantic notion is challenged. From a genius suffering from his artistic gifts, he (re)turns into a more powerful and vitalized middle-class figure. Furthermore, artistry is no longer strictly reserved for men. Women too become artists. This challenges the genre of the Künstlerroman, a genre that is sexualized by its structure. Many of these works are usually characterized as middlebrow, but my research shows that this is not an adequate concept to approach these novels. |
