Abstract :
With almost 30 titles appearing between 1712 and 1780, the ‘biblical epic’ was for a while a much practised genre by poets in the Northern Netherlands. Following up on the highly genre oriented and evaluative study of W.A.P. Smit from 1983 (Kalliope in de Nederlanden, part II), this contribution focuses on the way the authors interpreted the bible stories they adapted. In spite of efforts to stay true to Scripture, many of them show a clear tendency to not only visualise and explain the actions of biblical characters (and God), but also to make them more morally acceptable to contemporary readers. To that end, even small adaptations are not always shunned.
