Abstract :
Ruusbroec witnessed the transition from Latin to the vernacular. The transition to Middle Dutch, German and English necessitated the development of new terminology to express a new sensibility. And yet, Ruusbroec wanted these new texts in the vernacular to be faithful to the teachings and the tradition of the Church. Ruusbroec wrote all of his work in Middle Dutch and consciously wanted to connect with his predecessors who had used the vernacular. At the same time he tried to reconcile new spiritual conceptions with loyalty to church doctrine. Two difficult challenges that made him a trustworthy guide for spiritual life in the modern era.
