Abstract :

Readings of the Republic have varied between ethical and political since ancient times. Between these two tendencies this article seeks to detect a political ethics, a Platonic lesson on the practice of politics in the city, and to establish the conditions that make political action possible. It focuses firstly on the political model put forward by Plato and the way in which it proves compelling. It then studies the errors which, in ordinary cities, affect both socalled politicians and philosophers in order to identify the pitfalls to be avoided. Finally, it analyses the rules proposed by the Republic and the political behaviour they imply, while emphasizing the function of the virtues.
