Abstract :
θείην (§§ 14-17).

The suffix of the Proto-Indo-European optative is reconstructed as a verbal morpheme featuring full- and zero-grade variants, i.e., *-iéh1-/*-ih1-, according to most of the current handbooks. In addition, it is assumed that the suffix had the variant *-ih1- after the thematic vowel in the thematic stems, giving a complex suffix *-o-ih1-, and probably also in the sigmatic aorist, as *-s-ih1-. The inflection of the optative mood uses exclusively the so-called secondary endings. This usual reconstruction of the optative leaves many serious problems to be addressed, however. First, several attempts to trace the suffix back to its origins, either from a verbal root or from a nominal formation, will be reviewed (§§ 2-5). In the first vein, it has been quite often assumed, since the beginnings of Indo-European linguistics, that the suffix of the optative was somehow cognate with a verbal root meaning ‘to go’, that made up the last term of a periphrasis. All these attempts have remained fruitless, since it has proved impossible to reconstruct consistently the intermediate steps that led to the grammaticalized optative. This paper successively examines several controversial issues surrounding the development of the optative in the Indo-European languages and shows that the solution of these problems requires a new reconstruction of the optative suffix which is connected with its genesis. The first issue is the explanation of the Vedic type gameyam, gaméma, in other words the existence of optative forms that look thematic at the surface, while belonging to an athematic paradigm (§§ 6-8). The Vedic bhujema, always used with the prohibitive negation , is actually shown to be an injunctive form based on a periphrasis. The Vedic type dheyām and the general issue of the root aorist of verbs ending in laryngeal, and ending in °ā- in Indo-Iranian are then examined (§§ 9-13). The speculative account of the forms in the framework of the acrostatic type of the root aorist proves unworkable. In fact, some of the Old Avestan forms that are supposed to reflect this structure are better accounted for by the hypothesis of a serial verb construction that associated the injunctive of a passive aorist and the injunctive of a verb ‘to go’. The present paper then concentrates then on the internal and external history of the Vedic type dheyām and its relationship with the Gk. type θείην (§§ 14-17). It is shown that these formations match each other and reflect a further serial construction that associated the dative singular of a verbal abstract (based on the root noun) with potential value and the injunctive of a verb ‘to go’. This correspondence allows the verbal root to be reconstructed as *h1ieh1- (§ 18), which was used in the injunctive root present as the second (i.e., minor) verb of an asymmetrical serial verb construction. The optative of thematic stems is reflected in Indo-Iranian and Greek by forms that are incompatible with the usual reconstruction *-o-ih1-, since they presuppose the syllabicity of the /i/, instead of the expected contraction into a monosyllabic sequence *-oih1-. This has been explained until now by assumptions which are speculative (§§ 19-20). The hypothesis of an original sequence *-o-h1ih1- provides a straightforward source of the various forms (§ 22). It complies with the reconstruction of an original sequence *-s-h1ih1-, which accounts best for the multifarious variants of the optative of the sigmatic aorist in the Ancient Greek dialects, including the so-called Aeolic optative, and also in Epic language and in Cretan (§ 21). In order to explain the problematic choice of the form *-o- of the thematic vowel before the suffix in the thematic optative, one identifies this morpheme with the medio-passive 3.sg. ending *-o, of an injunctive form with impersonal value. This form belongs to a serial verbal construction, the second member of which was the injunctive present of the verb *h1ieh1- ‘to go’ (§ 23). Then, the conversion through univerbation and chunking of the second member of the verbal periphrasis into a modal suffix added to the verbal stem is explained by the ancient coexistence of the optative periphrasis with the imperative and a formal reduction that led to the optative of the root present or aorist (§ 24). While the optative formation was fully grammaticalized at Indo-European stage, several languages still reflect fossilized forms that go back to univerbated periphrastic constructions (§ 25). Basically the optative was based in the proto-language on two (or more) parallel serial verb constructions that used verbs in the injunctive, which is still reflected by the usage of secondary endings in the inflection of the optative.
